Child’s Bedroom Makeover Contest
In the Fall Issue 2012 of “Coulee Parenting Connection” magazine, Take II offered a bedroom makeover contest. From the many submitted entries, the bedroom below was selected. See the Holiday Issue 2012. We hope you will enjoy seeing the changes we made and come away with inspiration for your child’s room! During this holiday season, giving your child or teen the gift of a room makeover to be enjoyed for years to come, may be the best gift ever. We can make that gift happen for you.
A child’s room has many things you can use for inspiration and for transforming it from one that a child simply sleeps in, to one he or she loves to spend time in. For our contest winner we began by using the colorful duvet cover as our color inspiration. There were two themes we wanted to include in this room that we knew this little girl loved. First was a horse riding theme. The mother described her daughter as also loving “glitz” so that became theme #2. Combining those two somewhat polar themes was our challenge. Although we prefer to use what a homeowner has to incorporate into our redesign, in this particular case there were a few items we needed to purchase to really make this room look great and function well. Our goal was to keep purchased items to $100 or less. Items we needed that were most important to the room included a bedside table, some lamps, and a little artwork. The bedside table was an end table we found at Habitat’s Re-Store for $8.00. $6 worth of pink paint transformed it into a perfect night stand. Our bonus was finding a large frame that we also painted and used to frame the riding contest ribbons. The frame cost $1.50! The lamps with the pink shades we found on clearance at TJ Maxx. We especially love the artwork above the bed. We think the colorful flowers are a perfect match to the colors in the duvet. The artwork is a poster found at Hobby Lobby along with a frame. Not so crucial to the redesign itself, but items we purchased as a part of the contest included a bed skirt, pillow sham, and glitzy sequined pillow.
The horse theme was carried out with the ribbon display, horse sculpture, trophies (out of camera range) and a perfect pink cowboy hat; all things this little girl had. Glitzy additions included the sequin pillow, some soda bottles we painted along with the holder for the bottles and used as a floral vase, a banner with the child’s name hung over the window for a “valance” made from craft paper and ribbon, and some extra frames all painted pink. Rearranging the furniture to help balance the room and make the bed the focal point were important aspects to this redesign.
With neutral wall colors providing the background, the colors in this room really pop. And this room will be very easy to transition into a more grown up space as this little girl gets older. Pink may not be her future choice. Selecting another color inspiration such as the vibrant green or gold in the duvet can quickly change the look of the room. All that is needed is repainting the night stand and changing the lamp shades. Switching out the pink accessories for more grown up things will complete the new look.
After the room was completed, we think the comments from Mom and Daughter say it all. From the mother, “What I like best is how all the colors complement each other. With the new arrangement my daughter has been sleeping in her own room now. Before, she would want to stay in her sister’s room.” And from the daughter, “I love it, I love it, I love it!”
